Getting winter ready in Rogers Pass

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is urging residents to be winter ready, which means more than swapping out your tires for winter ones.

They are advising families and single residents to prepare for more than just icy roads, but for severe storms that could lead to power outages, and even evacuations.

Household emergency kits for winter hazards are what the CSRD is recommending. According to the CSRD, these should include:

  • Blankets
  • Warm clothing
  • Hand warmers
  • Portable phone charger
  • First-aid supplies
  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper
  • Non-perishable snacks

Prepared BC said that despite the province’s warmer winters in the past few years, people should still be prepared for sever weather. “Even with climate change, we will still experience cold, snow, wind and winter storms, but they may occur in places or ways they haven’t before,” read their statement.

The CSRD said that family emergency kits should be easily accessible and ready to go if immediate action is necessary during the event of an evacuation, or if the power goes out.
