Two people have died after a fatal motor vehicle accident in Kootenay National Park.
Columbia Valley RCMP is investigating the collision that involved three vehicles on Wednesday.
Just after 5:30 p.m. on July 8, police received a report of a serious motor vehicle incident near Simpson Monument on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park.
The collision saw response from Columbia Valley RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist, BC Emergency Health Services, local fire and rescue personnel, and STARS Air Ambulance.
The investigation determined that while maneuvering a turn, a westbound vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The two vehicles crashed at highway speed and were occupied solely by their drivers. Both drivers were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
Officials notified the BC Coroners Service, who then attended the scene as well.
“This was a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two lives. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased as they navigate this difficult time.” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson.
The third vehicle, which was occupied by two people, was only involved in the accident peripherally. Both occupants are believed to have endured minor injuries.
Highway 93 was closed down while emergency crews and investigators processed the scene. The highway remained closed until just after 1:00 a.m. this morning.
At this time no criminality is suspected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
