Golden Cycling Club gazebo project moves forward with backup location

The Golden Cycling Club’s plan to build a timber-frame gazebo at the Reflection Lake trailhead has received support from Golden Council, although provincial tenure issues are holding up the project.

Funding for the gazebo has already been secured through the Resort Municipality Initiative and Resident Directed Grants programs.

However, the Town of Golden’s Licence of Occupation for the Reflection Lake area has expired and must be renewed through the Province before the project can move ahead at the preferred site.

Town staff told Council they are already working on the renewal.

“We’ve been working back and forth with the cycling club on this one for quite some time, and this renewal process kind of turned into a bit of a multi-departmental challenge,” staff told Council.

The Town plans to combine the renewal with a separate tenure application involving the Reflection Lake gravel pit and parking area. Staff indicated the provincial process could take some time, with a report on the application expected to come before Council in September.

In the meantime, Council unanimously endorsed Reflection Lake as the preferred location for the gazebo and approved the Keith King Mountain Bike Skills Park as an alternate location if provincial approvals take too long.

The Golden Cycling Club says the gazebo would enhance an existing recreation area while providing a gathering space at the trailhead.

Having an alternate site could also help the club meet project funding deadlines and support an upcoming Capital Gaming Grant application.
