Howitzer training closes East Rogers area

The East Rogers area will be closed until Nov. 7 for howitzer testing for avalanche control in Rogers Pass.

Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces are conducting the tests.

The drill ensures the 105 mm howitzers are firing accurately to protect the highway corridor from avalanches in winter.

Parks Canada officials said it protects highway and railway traffic from natural avalanches, but it won’t make slopes safer for skiers or snowboarders.

Drivers should expect intermittent closures on the Trans-Canada Highway while testing is underway.
