Rogers Pass avalanche work closes highway until tomorrow night

The Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden has closed again and may not reopen until Friday night.

DriveBC said in an update on March 19 that the highway will be closed for the remainder of the day.

It added that efforts will be made to reopen parts of the highway, but little to no announcements will be made.

Travellers are asked to plan an alternate route during this time.

Avalanche Canada has also issued a warning, with Revelstoke in the “red zone” for avalanche risk, meaning there is high avalanche danger.

The warning was issued on March 18, saying avalanches will be large and may run full path.

Avalanche Canada advises people to avoid exposure to overhead avalanche terrain during periods of heavy loading from new snow, wind or rain. It also said to be aware of the potential for large avalanches due to buried weak layers and to avoid travelling on slopes below cornices.
