Police determine school safety concern unfounded

An alleged school safety concern involving a student at a Revelstoke school has been deemed unfounded by police.

On April 13 at approximately 5 p.m., Revelstoke RCMP received a report from a school principal that a student had allegedly made veiled statements indicating potential harm to other students the following day.

Police immediately launched an investigation.

Officers met with the student and their parents and worked closely with school administration. In a statement, police said that based on the information gathered, officers determined there was no threat to public safety.

Police said they are aware information related to the incident was shared on social media before official communication was distributed by the school and understand this may have caused concern in the community.

To provide reassurance and maintain a visible presence, Revelstoke RCMP officers were at the school throughout the day.

“The safety of students and staff is a top priority,” Staff Sgt. Chris Dodds, Revelstoke RCMP detachment commander, said. “We take all reports of this nature seriously and work closely with our education and community partners to ensure appropriate steps are taken.”

Anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak directly with school officials or contact the Revelstoke RCMP.
