City of Revelstoke warns residents of telephone scam

The City of Revelstoke is warning the public of a telephone scam targeting residents.

The fraudulent recorded message claims to be from a City public works employee, stating that there is an outstanding balance on the recipient’s account. The call then may prompt the receiver to press a number or provide payment information.

“The city does not use automated calls asking residents to press a number or provide payment information in response to an unexpected notice of an outstanding amount,” officials said.

If anyone receives this kind of call, the City advises them to hang up, do not provide any personal information or send money through a link or phone number.

Residents are encouraged to share this information with family, friends and neighbours, or anyone who may be vulnerable to telephone scams.
