Work is set to begin on upgrades to rest areas near Revelstoke along the Trans-Canada Highway, aimed at improving safety, accessibility and amenities for truck drivers and other motorists.
“Of the over 200 highway rest areas my ministry is responsible for, almost 70 per cent can accommodate commercial vehicles,” Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth said.
“Increasing this number, improving the accessibility and capacity of our rest areas, is an important way we can support the commercial trucking industry that people and businesses across the province depend on.”
Last month, Okanagan Aggregated Ltd. was awarded a contract worth more than $11 million to complete the enhancements. The work includes expanding the parking area, adding full flush washroom facilities, building an intersection and making lighting improvements.
Bihoy Mascarenhas, director of policy for the B.C. Trucking Association, said commercial drivers need safe and accessible rest areas and that they are not a luxury.
“When drivers have reliable places to pull over, perform safety checks, take needed breaks and meet regulatory rest requirements, it supports both road safety and the efficient movement of goods across B.C.,” he said. “These upgrades are a welcome investment in the people who keep our economy moving.”
Construction began March 16, 2026. The rest area will close to all vehicles April 1 to allow work to proceed. Completion is expected later this year.
